I Spent Time Inside the System. Now I'm Going Back In.

Updated: Aug 29

The wellness industry sells healing to people who already have quiet bedrooms and Saturday mornings to themselves. Sound baths in Sedona, breathwork retreats in Bali, cold plunges filmed for content. I have taught in those rooms and I love those rooms, but the people whose nervous systems are the most broken on this planet will never see the inside of one, because they are locked inside environments built on threat. Some of them are locked in literally.

I know where they are; I was one of them.

I spent time trapped inside the correctional system, I watched people I love get torn apart by it, and today I am writing publicly, for the first time, about what I am building because of it.

What Constant Threat Does to a Human Being

Your nervous system has one job that outranks every other job: keep you alive. Underneath your conscious awareness it runs a scan, several times a second, asking a single question. Am I safe? Scientists call that scanning neuroception, and it decides more about your life than your thoughts do, because whatever answer comes back determines which body you get to live in that day.

Now put a human being in an environment where the answer is never yes. Not at night, not at meals, not in a hallway, not for years. A stress response that was designed to fire for minutes gets held in the ON position, cortisol stays elevated, sleep fragments, digestion shuts down, and the brain reorganizes itself around one priority: watch everything. The research on chronic threat and the HPA axis is decades deep, and it all points the same direction.

Here's the part nobody tells you. From the inside, that adaptation doesn't feel like an adaptation, it feels like personality. You become vigilant, guarded, flat, explosive, numb, and the world reads every one of those states as a character flaw when what they actually are, underneath, is a body doing exactly what bodies are built to do in danger.

I did not learn this from a textbook first. I learned it from the inside, and I learned it watching people with real hearts and real minds get slowly rebuilt by that environment into someone their own families could barely recognize. I know what a $250,000 bond does to a family; I know what the waiting and the phone calls do to the people left holding it all together.

You cannot punish a nervous system into peace.

Getting Out Is Not Getting Out

Everyone thinks release day is the finish line, when it is actually the starting line of the hardest race in the whole thing, and almost nobody walks into it with a body that can run it.

Walking out of a high-threat environment does not switch the threat response off. The wiring that kept you alive in there comes home with you: the hypervigilance, the shallow sleep, the trigger response that fires before the thinking brain gets a vote. Survival wiring does not expire on release day. It has to be actively retrained, and retraining a nervous system requires the one thing that environment never let anyone practice: feeling SAFE.

So people come home to the same streets, the same stressors, no tools, no regulation, a body still braced for impact, and the world acts surprised when the story repeats itself. The statistics call it recidivism. I call it a body that was never given ONE honest chance to learn a different state. Hear me clearly, that is a mechanism, not an excuse for anyone's choices, and mechanisms can be worked with. I have watched willpower lose to an unregulated nervous system more times than I can count, in jails and in boardrooms, and I have watched regulation quietly win where lectures and threats never did.

I Healed Because I Had Access They Will Never Get

I got out, and I still was not free, because freedom is a nervous system state long before it is a legal status. My healing did not come from one breakthrough moment. It came from the work: over one hundred holistic modalities tested on my own body across years of trial and error. Breathwork, meditation, somatic movement, neurofeedback, cold, heat, prayer, subconscious rewiring, hours on the floor learning to feel safe inside my own skin. Sober since 2017. I rebuilt my biology and my connection to God in the same season, on purpose, because I do not separate the two; regulation opened the door and spirit walked me through it.

Understand what I am really telling you. I had access, time, teachers, and a thousand second chances to experiment until something worked. The people still inside get none of that, and neither do the officers who work those same halls, and both groups live in the exact environments where a human stress response breaks down fastest.

That gap is the injustice I cannot stop seeing, and it is the reason for what comes next.

The Mission: Prisons First, Every High-Stress Place Next

This month I filed the paperwork for The Unlimited Life Foundation, a nonprofit built for prison reform through healing rather than policy fights alone. The 501(c)(3) determination is active with the IRS (woohoo!), the website is being built right now, and I am telling you here first, before there is anything polished to show you, because this blog is where my real ones read.

The foundation is a connector. On one side there are companies and practitioners with evidence-based tools for the stress response: meditation and breathwork programs, somatic movement, biofeedback technology that lets a person literally watch their own nervous system learn. On the other side there are institutions full of human beings drowning in stress, the people who live in them AND the people who work in them. Almost nobody is building the bridge between those two sides, so that bridge is now my job.

Prisons and jails come first, because that is where my story started and where the need is most invisible. After that, every high-stress place: police stations, fire stations, hospitals, the jobs where burnout gets treated as the price of the badge or the shift.

One more thing, because I am careful with claims everywhere and this will be no exception. Reduced recidivism is the goal I am working toward and will measure honestly; it is not a promise I get to make before the evidence is in. The direction, though, I can promise.

What You Can Do Today

Nothing, yet, and that is the honest answer. I am not asking for donations, I am not selling anything, and there is no link to click, because the legal pieces are still moving and I refuse to build this any way but clean.

What I want from you today is smaller and bigger at the same time. Change how you see the next person you meet who is fresh out, or burned out, or braced for impact in a job that eats people alive. You are NOT looking at a character flaw; you are looking at a nervous system that adapted to a place you never had to survive. If you want to understand how healing actually moves between human beings, start with what I wrote about co-regulation in Why You Can't Heal Your Nervous System Alone: The Biology of the Room, because rooms regulate people, and I intend to change the rooms.

The website is coming, and the full story with it. If you want to follow this work as it unfolds, the Unlimited Podcast is where I will talk about it first. Stay close. This is the most important thing I have ever built.
